Where We Fish

One of the greatest advantages of fishing with Fly Fish Belize Charters is the sheer amount and variety of water available to us.

Our guiding range covers a huge portion of Northern and Central Belize—from the Manatee River in the south and all the way north, past Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye, to Bacalar Chico on the Mexican border. To the south, our range follows the Drowned Cayes to English Caye, Middle Long Caye and the Twelve Feet Bank/Colson Cayes range around English Caye Channel.

Within that range are miles upon miles of flats, remote cayes, rivers, creeks and lagoons. It's an enormous and incredibly varied fishery, and much of it sees surprisingly little fishing pressure. Once we move away from the more commonly fished areas, there are relatively few guides working such a vast amount of water. On many days, we can fish without seeing another fishing boat.

More Water Means More Options

Having such a large range isn't simply about travelling farther. It gives us options.

We aren't tied to fishing the same handful of flats day after day. Tides, wind, weather, season and target species all influence where the best opportunities may be. Having access to so many different areas allows us to choose the water that makes the most sense for the conditions and for you.

Some days that might mean poling expansive flats and cayes looking for Permit and Bonefish. Another day could take us into protected mainland waters in search of Tarpon and Snook. The fishery can change dramatically from one area to another, sometimes within the same day.

Permit caught on the northern flats

North: Flats & Caribbean Water

The character of the fishery changes dramatically depending on which direction we travel from Belize City.

Heading north, we find the clear, shallow water flats Belize is known for. Grass and sand flats stretch between larger cayes, broken up by turquoise channels and an intricate network of shallow water. Our range takes us past Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye, all the way north to Bacalar Chico on the Mexican border.

Fishing the deeper southern flats and reef

South: Reef & Deeper Water

Heading south offers almost a complete 180. Following the Drowned Cayes takes us toward English Caye, Middle Long Caye and the Twelve Feet Bank and Colson Cayes area around English Caye Channel. Here, the water becomes deeper, with large coral patch reefs rising from the depths alongside the Belize Barrier Reef and hard bottomed “pancake flats” sitting surrounded by deeper water. Many of these flats are wadeable, creating a completely different landscape and style of fishing from the shallow grass and sand flats farther north.

Across this huge area, flats, cayes, channels, coral structure and deeper water create a remarkably diverse fishery, with opportunities to pursue Permit, Bonefish and Tarpon in very different settings.

Snook caught in mainland rivers

Mainland Rivers, Creeks & Lagoons

The mainland gives us an entirely different fishery again.

Rivers, narrow creeks and lagoons provide a sharp contrast to the open flats, allowing us to target fish in completely different environments. Our range extends south as far as the Manatee River, opening up another vast area of water to explore.

These protected systems are particularly exciting for Tarpon and Snook. They also give us another set of options when wind and conditions make the open water less appealing.

Fishing Beyond the Usual Spots

Some of our favorite days are spent exploring water that sees very few anglers.

The size of the fishery means there are always new corners to learn, seasonal movements to understand and areas that fish differently with changing tides and conditions. That exploration is part of what keeps guiding here interesting. It is also part of what makes every charter different.

We don't simply return to the same spot because it produced fish yesterday. We use our knowledge of the water, the conditions and how the fish are moving to decide where we believe you'll have the best opportunities that day.

Belize's Big Four, Across an Enormous Range

There's a lot of water to fish in Belize, and no two areas are quite the same. Tell us what you want from your day and we'll use our knowledge of this range to decide where to go, what to target and how to make the most of the conditions. From remote cayes and open flats to mainland rivers and quiet creeks, there's always somewhere worth exploring.
