Fishing Seasons in Belize

There really is no off season in Belize. Permit, Bonefish, Tarpon and Snook can be found year round, with every month offering the potential for exceptional days on the water.

The fishery doesn't switch on and off. It changes. Weather, wind, rainfall, water temperature and tides shape where we fish and what we target. With access to everything from open flats and cayes to protected mainland rivers, creeks and lagoons, we can adapt to the conditions and find productive water in every season.

Cooler & Drier

The winter months generally bring cooler temperatures, lower humidity and some of Belize's most comfortable weather.

Cold fronts can occasionally bring stronger northerly winds and generally lower water conditions across all stages of the tide. These lower water levels can create some particularly productive snook and bonefishing on the flats. Between fronts, there can also be beautiful periods of clear skies, lighter winds and excellent conditions across the fishery.

Permit and bonefish remain available throughout these months, while our mainland rivers, creeks and lagoons give us additional options for tarpon and snook.

Warmer & Drier

As we move into spring, temperatures begin to climb and Belize generally experiences some of its drier weather.

Warmer water and longer periods of settled weather can create excellent opportunities across the fishery. Permit and bonefish remain a major focus on the flats, while tarpon and snook continue to provide opportunities throughout both the caye and mainland systems.

Around March and April, we also begin to see some of our larger tarpon showing up, adding the possibility of encountering bigger fish alongside the resident tarpon found throughout our fishery year-round.

This is also a great time to experience the variety of water we fish, from clear, shallow grass and sand flats to deeper water, coral structure and hard-bottomed flats.

Migratory Tarpon & Summer Permit

By May and June, larger migratory Tarpon begin showing up across the reef flats, bringing some of the biggest fish of the year into play. These fish generally remain through June and into mid to late July.

Resident Tarpon are here year round, but the migration changes the scale of the fishery. During this period, we can encounter everything from smaller resident fish to Tarpon pushing 150 lbs.

Summer can also produce excellent Permit fishing, particularly around the reef. Floating sargassum creates one of the more unusual opportunities of the year, with Permit often cruising the edges of the weed. We sight fish to them with floating flies presented along the sargassum line, essentially dry fly fishing for Permit.

Summer also brings warmer temperatures and the beginning of Belize's wetter season, but rain rarely means losing an entire day. Tropical showers are often short and localized, and conditions can change quickly.

Bonefish and Snook remain available throughout the summer, giving us plenty of options alongside the seasonal Tarpon and Permit fishing.

Quieter Waters

Late summer and fall bring some of Belize's warmest water, along with a greater chance of tropical weather and rainfall.

They can also be some of the quieter months on the water, with fewer visitors and less fishing pressure across much of the fishery.

Permit, Bonefish, Tarpon and Snook are all still present, and flexibility becomes especially valuable during this time of year. Weather can change quickly, so we let the conditions guide where we fish and what we target.

As we move into November and December, larger Tarpon begin pushing through the fishery again. We often find these fish close to Belize City, particularly around river mouths and deeper channels, bringing another opportunity for larger Tarpon alongside the resident fish we encounter year round.
